Spotlight On: National Drowning Prevention Alliance

The National Drowning Prevention Alliance brings attention to drowning as the leading cause of death for young children. They have an extensive website sharing drowning incidents statistics and how parents and professionals can prevent these tragedies. To practice water safety it is important to use all five layers of protection.

Five Layers of Protection for Water Safety

  1. Barriers & Alarms: Self-closing and latching gates around the perimeter of the pool as well as alarms to alert when pool is accessed
  2. Supervision: Clear communication with all adults to ensure constant supervision around any standing water
  3. Water Competency: Basic water safety skills
  4. Life Jackets: Use U.S. Coast Guard approved jackets when not expecting to go in the water
  5. Emergency Preparation: Learning how to use CPR and rescue breaths as well as keeping a phone available for calling emergency services
